On 17 October 2003 national and regional newspapers and radio stations reported an urgent message:
It is estimated there are 70,000 hectares of derelict and vacant land across England and Wales*.
As it stands, we are wasting an area of urban land the size of Greater London. CABE Space's campaign, Wasted Space?, worked with the media to urge people to nominate areas of neglected or derelict land in their own neighbourhoods. Over 2,000 people responded.
