Six sites have been short-listed in the campaign to find Britain's worst wasted spaces. Chosen by CABE Space from thousands of sites nominated by the public across the UK, the land exemplifies a problem that affects an estimated 70,000 hectares of land across England and Wales

Salford
Wasted for Six years
'It would be wonderful if it could be turned into a play area for the local children and a communal garden for nearby residents. The Ascension Primary School was demolished six years ago and since then the area has simply been left derelict. At the moment it's an eyesore and a waste.'
Nominated by Val Broadbent, local resident

Picture of wasted space - Empty railway land (Cheltenham)

Cheltenham
Wasted for 40 years Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
‘…a total waste of space. The railways are responsible for hundreds of derelict and forgotten spaces all over the country. This one isn’t big, but situated near a heavily populated area with no decent play space for over a mile, it could easily be turned into a playground for local children.’
Nominated by Paul Downey, local resident

Picture of wasted space - Waterloo Road (Salisbury)

Salisbury
Wasted for Ten years (approx.) Waterloo Road, Salisbury The land, which has the famous Salisbury Water meadows visible in the background, sits within a residential area sorely lacking in amenities and open space. Local resident Gavin Paye, who has been campaigning to get it cleaned up, said, ‘With proper planning the site has the potential to be a very nice area’ he said.

East Molesey
Wasted for 20 years (approx.) Between Hampton Court station and the Thames, Surrey John la Bouchardiere,
‘The area has been derelict for nearly two decades and given the number of tourists who pass it every day, it is unforgivable that it should be filled with such an unsightly pile of rubbish’.
Nominated by
local resident

Sheffield
On the corner of Fentonville Street and Sharrow Lane, Sheffield
The area, probably left empty when a house was demolished, typifies many small spaces that lie forgotten on streets throughout the UK attracting litter, fly-tipping and household rubbish.

Stockport
Banks of the Mersey, Stockport
Despite being filled with trees and with the potential to be a wildlife or recreational area for locals, the large area of land, where the Old Gorsey Bank housing estate once stood, has become an eyesore due to dumping and vandalism. Earlier this year a planning proposal was submitted for an office development on the site. To date no decision has been reached.
