Manifesto for Better Public spaces:
1. High on the political agenda
We will encourage the government to ensure that creating and maintaining public space is a political priority, on both a national and local level
2. For everyone
We will encourage people of all ages to play an active role in deciding what our public spaces should be like, and how they should be maintained
3. Well designed
We will work to raise awareness of the importance of public space, and will help equip designers, planners and managers with the skills to achieve excellence
4. Well maintained
We will work to ensure that the care of public spaces is acknowledged as an essential community service. Parks urgently need increased, more stable and better coordinated funding from both the public and private sectors
5. Fun
We will work to increase public debate about the issue of risk in outside spaces, and will encourage people to make decisions that give more weight to the benefits of making spaces interesting, rather than to the perceived risks
6. Healthy
We will work to ensure national and local health policy recognises the role of high quality public space in helping people to improve their physical and mental health
7. Sociable
We will encourage those involved in creating public space to understand the importance of making them accessible for and reflective of different cultures, and finding a place for art in public space
8. Natural
We will encourage people creating public spaces to protect and enhance biodiversity, and to promote the benefits of biodiversity to local people
9. Safe
We will encourage councils to understand that crime prevention can be achieved through investment in good design and management of public space
10. A source of pride for us all
We will encourage people from all sectors of the community to give time to improving their local environment |
