Support the Manifesto for Better Public Spaces!
Public space should be:
- For everyone
- Well-designed
- Well-maintained
- Fun, healthy, sociable, natural, safe
- A source of pride for us all
- High on the political agenda
Read more about our pledges | "Everyone
should have access to trees and parkland, even in our cities.
Parks bring communities together, young and old alike.
We need to take care of the ones we have and turn more of our
wasteland into beautiful outdoor spaces that everyone can enjoy."
(Dame
Judi Dench in support of CABE Space's Wasted Space? campaign)

Too
many of us take our parks for granted. Whether they're well-tended
or neglected we keep quiet. It's time to speak up.
We will present the Manifesto - including the number of signatories and the
comments we have received from people who have signed up - at the Delivering
Sustainable Communities Summit in January 2005. Organised by the Office
of the Deputy Prime Minister, the summit will be attended by over 2,000 delegates,
including Government Ministers and leading national and international experts.

Sir Ian McKellen, Actor
"Why do we define space with fences? Why don't we take
our litter home? Why do we think we can survive without beauty?"
(In support of CABE's Wasted Space? campaign) |

Dame Anita
Roddick, Founder of the Body Shop
"This piece of land is in Littlehampton, West Sussex - a town
I love. I was born here and have lived in and around it all my
life. So it makes me mad seeing such a large piece of land
just sitting there and doing nothing. I would turn that piece
of land into a farmers market."
(In support of CABE Space's Wasted Space? campaign) |
 |
Trevor Nelson,
Broadcaster/Presenter
"It's easy to become blind to wasted space - you don't
even notice it as you pass by every day. But imagine if this
space
was a fantastic park where you could sit during the day and
watch kids playing football and at night come to live music events."
(In support of CABE Space's Wasted Space? campaign) |
 |
Ben Chaplin,
Actor
"It's pretty unforgivable in a country as heavily populated
as ours, where urban space is at a premium, to have large areas
of wasted space when it could be used for the benefit of the
community." (In support of CABE Space's Wasted Space? campaign) |
 |
Linford Christie,
Former Olympic 100m Champion
"This piece of land is the view from the grandstand at the
Linford Christie Stadium in West London. It could so easily be
turned into a useful part of the stadium. It upsets me personally
that such an opportunity is being wasted." (In support of CABE Space's Wasted Space? campaign) |
